Alexa and Jen’s Big Day Out: “Cool-Goth-Friend” Edition

Dress: Hot Topic | Cardigan: Hot Topic | Shoes: Payless

Hello fellow readers! It’s me Alexa, your Cool-Goth-Friend! I know that Jenny already made her post a few weeks ago about our big outing, but I just never got to it until today.

Like Jenny mentioned previously, she came up to visit me so we could get some work done on the blog and take cute pics of our outfits over at Deep Cut Gardens. My boyfriend, known as Mr. Ian, brought me here when we first started dating and I fell in love with the place. It has a beautiful green house with various different species growing inside, and the grounds are well maintained and look spectacular in the spring and summer time.

Black Seasame Latte

blacksesame0

I am super excited about sharing this recipe. I first tried a black sesame latte at Paris Baguette, which probably was not even close to being vegan or healthy, but it came in a cute little cup (I just had to share via Instagram!) Their website gives no calories, no amounts of sugar, and no ingredients. Which is a pain. My local HMart has a few sesame soy milk boxes that I like snacking on, but corn syrup and oils are added to the milk.

Blaze

Bubba and Blaze

Bubba and Blaze

Hello again. I posted here once last week and planned on putting up a tea review and then a fashion post, but this last week has been one of the hardest times of my life.

Bubba and me - thanks Mom!

Bubba and me – thanks Mom!

I have been around horses for almost as long as I can remember. Not many people get to say that, and I consider myself lucky every day. The first two that impacted my life in a big way were Blaze and her best buddy Bubba. Bubba passed away three years ago, and it was hard for me back then because I had already been removed from her for a while. I was finishing up my junior year at SVA in the city when my mother told me we had to put her down. I remember being so upset, and very worried about Blaze. The two of them couldn’t stand to be separated for any length of time. You would have to take both of them out to the field from the barn together for them to be calm…what was Blaze supposed to do without her other half? Mom said she reacted as, I think, almost any animal would. Confused, then understanding.

On April 16th, Blaze left this world, and left a hole in my heart.

Celebrating Easter with Cauliflower and Carrot Cookies

04-20-14

Earrings: Target | Shirt: Monteau via Modcloth | Skirt: Downeast via Modcloth | Tights: Target | Shoes: Rocket Dog via DSW

I think my blog should be called “The girl who shops at Modcloth” because it is scary how much stuff I get there. Sometimes I make delusional memories of buying my clothing from Ruche, but I seriously only made one order from there. Eek. Truth is that I like the shoppers that Modcloth has, they have great quality for whatever price range.

This outfit was for Easter dinner. I wanted something that was comfy since my husband and I were driving all the way to Long Island to visit my Grandma. To put in perspective how annoying this is, you have to know New Jersey and New York culture. Long Island is next to Manhattan (what people think of when they say New York City), and is easy to see on a map of New York state. The island is where Brooklyn and Queens are located, but if you hear someone from New York or New Jersey refer to Long Island, they mean everything east of New York City on the island. Part of the distancing of New York City and the Long Island name is probably because Long Island is so freakin long. I mean it is the same length as Connecticut state. That means it takes a long time to and from the island. Commuting to New York City from Long Island could take just as long as some of the suburbs in New Jersey. And it is one of most densely populated islands in the world, making everything congested. Probably half the time I spent in the car was just trying to get through the island. Luckily she lives in Amityville, which is less than halfway in the island. And yes, it is the town in The Amityville Horror.

But if Long Island cultural perspective is boring to you, maybe cookies and cauliflower won’t be. I had a feeling no one would of made me a vegetarian dish, so made I made a side dish of roasted cauliflower, chickpeas, and olives. I remember making this recipe in the past so I figured I would give it a go. I also knew I should make these yummy carrot cake cookies.

Mango Mint-Chai Smoothies

mangomint1

I got a text from my sister this morning saying that I should make a dish for Easter dinner. My Grandma, like every Grandma, has little to no perception of vegan eating. So I spent my morning googling “easter vegan recipes” while sipping my new smoothie. I think I settled on a chickpea and cauliflower roast, which I will report back on.

But I am missing the whole point of this post- it is this smoothie. I bought a whole bunch of tea powders from Season with Spice, which I will post a review of them later on. One mix I love using in shakes is the Peppermint Chai. Most experiments with the powders have been at work. Almost all have been tasty when blending the tea powders with almond milk and protein powder. But sometimes I don’t want to use protein powder, as I feel like they make my tummy bloat. This shake is pretty simple, and is filling.

Allow Me to Introduce Myself!

Alexa HEARTS Punk

Oh hi there! I would just like to take this time to introduce myself. My name’s Alexa, and I’m the other half of “One Raw Bite”. To put it plainly – I’m the artistic and slightly less healthy half (not necessarily because I don’t WANT to be).

Jenny and I have known each other since I was a freshman in high school (she was a senior). In the short period of time that we went to school together we made a strong bond with each other. Every time we saw each other we listened to music (specifically JPop or KPop related), watched movies (also of the Asian variety) and, you guessed it…ate delicious food! We were much less healthy back then…but hey, that’s what being 16 and 18 years old is for, right?! We also quickly realized that we both have a love of fashion (our tastes have become somewhat refined over the past few years), so really we’re just a match made in heaven.

Alexa and Jen’s Big Day Out

04-10-14-1

Shirt: YesStyle | Skirt: Comme Toi via Modcloth | Shoes: Em & Sprout

So this Wednesday I drove up to my hometown to talk to my co-blogger Alexa. She hasn’t been too active on the blog, but you will recognize her work on the logo and the drawings. We decided she should blog more, since she is a really cool cat. Which means I need to update a bunch of stuff since the blog is mostly info about me… and none of the “about” stuff was really finished anyways. Alexa and I talked about the blog, took photos of our cute outfits, which hopefully Alexa will post in a fashion post soon.

Let me just say I love this skirt from Modcloth. I’ve been wearing it a good bit to work since it is super cozy and has pockets. Pockets are something that prevents me from wearing skirts to work. If I want to listen to my ipod I sometimes having to tuck it into my skirt and undies- no friggin joke! And this shirt I pulled out of dresser and made me remember why I loved YesStyle. Yes, they have limited sizes and they have terrible returns, but they have great t-shirts. This one is not only cute, but the fit is really flattering.

Surprise Dress and Korean Art

04-07-14-1 04-07-14-2

Dress: Bea & Dot via Modcloth | Pin: thrifted gift | Tights: handme down | Shoes: Pink Studio via Modcloth

Can I first talk about this dress? Modcloth was having their Stylish Surprise sale, in which you specify your size, and they send a random article of clothing. For $10 you could get something that was $40 or $200. Of coarse you have little say in what you get. They do this to get rid of unsellable clothes that aren’t damaged but have been returned after being taken down from the site. In the past I have gotten this sailor dress, which I wear often, but isn’t something I loved (it’s just practical). I also got a cardigan which is snuggly, but no good for my overheated apartment. I still get excited and I get one article of clothing each time they have the sale. I keep hoping I will get one of the more expensive dresses.

This time I opened the box and saw the big beautiful Bea & Dot label. I knew I struck gold. This dress isn’t sold anymore by the label, but I still managed to find which dress it was- Technical Writer Dress. It is really amazing. The fabric is thick and great quality. The dress is lined and fitted with pockets. And my favorite part of the dress is that it has fake buttons in the front. As a chesty girl, I usually tug at my buttons try to avoid pulling. No need for this dress.

I wanted to wear this dress earlier but for whatever reason couldn’t until this weekend. It was the perfect weather to wear to the art museum to FINALLY see the Treasures of Korea exhibit.

Vegan Green Tea Latte

greentealatte1

One of the most disappointing moment for some vegans is trying to get a hot creamy drink. Sure if you go to a coffee shop they almost always have soy milk (heck even almond milk sometimes!) but you might not be able to advance past a simple latte. See, most baristas are unaware of all the ingredients in their mixes. Although I read that Starbuck’s tea lattes are vegan, most smaller shops use powders that have whey in it.

Although I find that some chai tea mixes by Tazo (used at Starbucks) and Zhena’s Tea, they tend to be very sweet. In fact I have to mix them with unsweetened almond milk, and still find them to be too sweet. Not to mention, they are technically not vegan as they contain honey. I then go on a frenzy of making the perfect vegan chai teas. Most have resulted in being dumped in my kitchen sink.

Homemade Alphabet Soup

alpha1

This recipe is in heavy rotation in this house. It might take awhile to chop everything up in small pieces, but I always seem to have the ingredients around. In fact I always make sure I have a large can of crushed tomatoes in the cabinet, and alphabet pasta just incase. I always start with a carrot, a stalk of celery, and onion, then work with what veggies I have in the fridge. Did I use half of a turnip? I’ll chop it up. Broccoli stalks? I’ll chop it up.

The recipe started from How It All Vegan from their “kids” section. I made alterations to the recipe, and tweaked it so many times that I can’t even remember fully what the whole recipe was. I have the entire recipe memorized, which made writing down the recipe a little daunting. I always just add as much stock as I need, usually dependent on how much veggies I chop.
